Williams, Arizona

Williams is located about 60 miles South of the Grand Canyon and 35 miles West of Flagstaff. We drove down the main street right before their 4th of July parade. The temperature in Williams was 64 degrees, almost 40 degrees cooler than it was earlier in the day at the Grand Canyon. The tractors and cars were part of the Northern Arizona Antique Tractor and Engine Display.

Founded in the late 1800’s by ranchers, railroaders, and lumbermen, Williams’ name comes from the famous trapper and “mountain man”, Bill Williams. Remnants of those early days are still visible in the buildings, streets, and neighborhoods of modern-day Williams.

The historic district of this once a bawdy frontier town, now offers glimpses into Williams’ colorful past. Saloons, bordellos, and shops have been brought back to life through the care and concern of present-day Williams merchants.
